Making a Moby-Style Wrap

I made a Moby-Style wrap for a friend recently who was expecting her fourth child.

If anyone needs her hands free, this mommy does!  She wanted a wrap, sling, or carrier of some sort and decided a Moby suited her needs, so I volunteered to do the sewing.  Another friend made one for me when I was expecting my second baby, so I took her advice on sewing this wrap.

Jersey knit makes a great wrap, so I started my fabric hunt a few months ago before settling on a cute fabric with multicolored polka dots.  I also added in a nice blue to make it a tad bit more masculine, but it really is pretty gender neutral.

I followed the instructions on MonkeySeeMonkeyDo for making the wrap, which some clever folks call a Fauxby.  Ehow actually had a helpful article too, which I used for advice on the length of the wrap.

The total cost of fabric came out to a little over $30, with a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby.  However, I had enough fabric to make two Moby wraps, so each wrap is $15.  Moby wraps retail for $43 at Target, so any way you dice it, this is a deal.

Moby brand wraps always have a tag to show the mom where the midpoint of the wrap is, so that it can be tied on well.  Instead, I sewed on a cute turtle applique, in keeping with the baby's theme.

I found jersey knit to be funky to deal with for a novice sewer like myself, since it's so stretchy.  I ended up opting for sewing a simple zigzag stitch on the edges to keep them from fraying, rather than a traditional hem.  If I made a wrap for myself, I wouldn't even bother sewing it at all.  I would just cut the appropriate yardage and tie that baby on!

Speaking of which, I felt like I couldn't give my friend a wrap that I wasn't comfortable putting my own baby in, so after I finished sewing it, I put 5 month old Alexandre in the wrap to see what he thought.

Looks like it passed the baby test!
