Bye Bye, Binky

I think it might be time for my baby boy to say good-bye to his beloved paci.

At 16 months, my husband cringes when he sees Andrew toddling around with his pacifier in his mouth. We have a rule that he only gets the paci at bed time and nap time, but my little guy has a knack for finding them anyway. He throws his paci over the crib railing in the morning and then picks it up later on. He's sneaky that way.

Yesterday he even managed to find a paci, move it to one side of his mouth, and drink milk from his sippy cup out of the other side of his mouth.

He liked his paci after he was born, but was starting to lose interest in it around 5 weeks of age. Later that week, he ended up having lung surgery. And thus began our paci attachment. His nurses worked hard to get him to take the paci as a comfort mechanism when he was recovering and in a lot of pain. I can still remember how thrilled we were when we figured out how to tuck the paci under his cannula and use the oxygen tubes to hold it in place. Nearly 15 months later, he still loves his MAM paci.

Isabelle, 2, kissing her 1 month old baby brother.  She had to pull his paci out first.

My first born, Isabelle, loved both her paci and her fingers. At 8 months, I took away the paci and she hardly noticed. She loved sucking her fingers too much to care. At 13 months, she stopped the finger sucking completely, so this is the first time I've had to wean a toddler from a paci.

I really don't care if Andrew takes a paci at this age. My only concern is that baby #3 will arrive in 6 weeks. If Alexandre takes a paci (and I really hope he does!) how difficult will it be to take away Andrew's paci at 2 or 3 years of age, when baby brother still has one?

And since daddy is a big fan of taking away the paci now, I think we should go ahead and take the plunge. Let's just hope Andrew doesn't revert back to the paci habit once his baby brother arrives! I'm counting on a toddler's short memory to help me out with this one.

Andrew's favorite pacis are the Austrian-made MAM pacis.  I love their Fairytale line, and I call the bottom one his "Sir Andrew" paci.

Any advice? How old were your babies when you took away the paci? Was it a hard or smooth transition to make?
